Achilles tendonitis

What is Achilles tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is a common complaint. Runners, among others, often suffer from Achilles tendonitis, but complaints about Achilles tendonitis are also common among people who do not exercise much. In short, it is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon that runs from the calf muscle to the heel. It occurs in 2 points: 1. At the level of the attachment of the tendon to the heel bone, sometimes even with bone outgrowth (Haglund's Exostosis)2. Measured at a height of 9-12 cm from the ground in the tendon itself.

Achilles tendonitis can be treated excellently with the High Energy Focused ESWT Shockwave therapy treatment from Physiotherapy & ShockWave Doetinchem. If you suffer a lot from your Achilles tendon, it may not only be inflamed, but a complete or partial tear of the tendon may even occur. It is also possible that there is inflammation of the bursa under the tendon. The part of the Achilles tendon that is inflamed can be the part above the heel, but swelling can also cause a thickening in the middle of the tendon. Blood flow is limited in this part of the tendon. Causes The cause of Achilles tendonitis is usually the same as that of heel spurs, namely overload due to unprepared (i.e. without warming up) exercise or by simply wearing the wrong footwear (for a long period of time). This may involve a short-term high overload or a long-term low overload. With the latter type, calcifications often occur in the tendon. These are also affected and broken down by the ShockWave. Fortunately, at Physiotherapy & ShockWave Doetinchem we have a lot of experience with both types of Achilles tendonitis, which means we are able to treat you quickly and effectively. Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis include: Mild pain in the Achilles tendon that disappears after a few hours. Pain or severe stiffness when standing up. Pain or irritation when walking (both normal walking and running). It is also possible that your Achilles tendon feels a little thicker or swollen. If your Achilles tendon is torn or torn, you can no longer do anything due to the severe pain that occurs and walking is no longer possible. You should contact a specialist at the hospital immediately. Of course, you can always contact us if you have any doubts because an Achilles tendonitis, for example, is very similar to a heel spur complaint.
